My nephew (and I most certainly question his intelligence) named his new baby daughter "Poison Ivy". They called her Ivy for a while, which is decent, but when she started school she goes by Poison. What are these people thinking?

I missed the ending to "marry my dad". Which one did they choose?

>There is a song (I think by the Platters) called "Groovin" and the >line goes > >Life would be ecstacy >You and me, endlessly > >which I heard as: > >Life would be ecstacy >You and me.. and LESLIE! > >…

In response to your "ticks me off", we have handled this rather well by making sure that the supervisors know that how well and promptly they conduct their subordinate's reviews is one of the major items that they themselves will be reviewed on. Wh…

I love this job because every day something different happens. It is not the same old thing every day. I work for a small consulting company (35 ee's) and enjoy wearing lots of different hats. It's fun to come to work day after day and find out t…

Helena - Time for one more? - I would like to see your benefit form as well. Thanks in advance. Fax 888-890-2991.

An update on this "paperwork problem" employee - when finally, seriously, confronted with the fact that he was so far behind in his time sheets and submission of documentation for corporate credit card charges, he decided that he did not want to wor…

We pay $.26 per mile and our ee's think we are SO BAD - Owner will not budge on this. We also pay only $10 per diem if ee has an overnight stay. I know this is way cheap - but we are a private consulting company and the Owner gets to choose.

I agree with you - I go way above and beyond. In my defense, I only have 33 employees, and very little turnover, so only have 1 or 2 on COBRA at any given time. If/when our company grows, I will have to rethink my policy.

Another reason to be more rigid in cancelling for non-payment of premium: Our carrier (Blue Cross) will only let us cancel back two months. So, if I allow a COBRA participant to lapse by more than that, I cannot get a credit on our account for mor…

Many years ago (22?) my Air Force husband was moved from Oklahoma to California. I was granted unemployment benefits from Oklahoma at that time because I had to leave a job that it would have been an "undue hardship" to continue - talk about a comm…

Thank you ALL for your responses. I can't begin to tell you how gratifying it is to know that you are all out there dealing with the same issues as I am and that you are all so willing to share your knowledge/opinions/humor. You're the best! Deb …

Well - upon further research Minnesota statute states 7 working days upon written request. Thanks to all of you for your kind responses. I too think 7 days is kinda a stretch. Ours is not to wonder why....

While sad to say, it is usually best just to confirm that they did work, the dates they worked, and what their job title was. I personally feel it is okay to say if I would rehire - IF they ask me that question. I don't EVER volunteer ANYTHING. I…

Thanks for keeping us up to date with the news. It's nice to see how problems are ultimately resolved. I know that sometimes I get emotionally involved with the problems presented, and then enjoy the responses so much, but then never get to hear h…

My thoughts EXACTLY Don D. I think there is more to this story - for the GM to quit over this is toooo convenient. I think he is trying to get out of the line of fire for some reason to be determined.

In Minnesota, if the company is the "moving" party - meaning that if we make the ee leave before their notice is played out, then the ee WILL be eligble for U/comp until his formal term date. We just had a voluntary term letter given to us by an …

We had this happen to an ee at my firm. This ee was required to be on the road 4 days/week and in the office 1 day/week. He was the only mechanical engineer on staff, so we hired a college student (this was during the summer) to drive him around t…

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with my receptionist! Time and time again I explain to her that she must put a call on hold to take other calls - and she always says "I DO". However, somehow the overage calls always get to other ee's cover lines. I …

Not sure if this is just pertinent to Minnesota, but if we reduce an EE's hours, and they don't like it, they can quit and go collect unemployment. The reason is that we have made their job "considerably less attractive". I think this prevents ER'…

To explain why this presents a problem - Sometimes this EE is the only person in the office and HAS to get to the post office and bank. The effect it will have on the other two ee's in the office is that they will now have to reschedule their work …

Of course I meant to say "on the job" - not 'one the job"! Thanks everyone for your quick response. I thought I did the right thing, but the EE thinks we are being "unfair" to her and the other ee's who will have to pick up the chores. Oh well, l…

I think she did not tell her doctor about the "black out". I was not sure I should ask her that. I don't want to create a "perceived disabililty", although have I done so already by not allowing her to drive? And, we currently pay ee's mileage whe…

Yeah - can't wait to hear how this one resolved. Spill it Tracey!

My question is this - why would this particular employee be used "as an example" for other employees? I am sure the theft was done in private, the discovery was probably made in private and the discipline should be done in private. No one else in t…

It is my understanding that a voluntary term CAN actually be considered a constructive discharge if the reason for the term is that the working environment is such that the employee can no longer work there because it has become a "hostile" environm…
