Superbowl Half-time show

Somebody has to bring it up!

Did anybody else sit through the entire half-time show? I moved closer to the tv with my daughters, because they love to watch Janet Jackson dance, they love Justin Timberlake, and I love Kid Rock. But . . .

. . . when Janet Jackson's top got "ripped" and she exposed herself to the world, we were all a little shocked.

That will be the most memorable half-time show for our family!

• Missed it. None of those performers interested me. I switched over to Speed Channel and watched a program about Ferrari's. Much more entertaining.
• Apologies are flying around this morning. Justin T is claiming it was an accident. No word from Janet.
I am embarassed to say that I have no excuse for watching the whole half time show other than being firmly ensconsed on the couch and the remote not under my control.
Anyway, I am a big Pats fan and I am SOOOO happy today!!!! x:D
• Accident my a**. She shows us once again what truly tasteless is.
• I don't believe for a minute it was an accident. That top came off way too easily when Justin pulled on it. I think they knew exactly what was going to happen. And...isn't live TV supposed to be on a delay just to prevent things like that from being broadcast all over the world? It was truly in bad taste and not something for children to see.
• The apologies are flying today and rightfully so.

Why Janet Jackson in the first place? She hasn't had a big hit for several years. Plus, she is obviously connected with Michael Jackson who is currently embroiled in a high profile child molestation case.

The choice seems odd. The results speak for themselves.

Aerosmith and Janet Jackson? Is this 1992?
• Let's not forget Janet was the Playboy centerfold a few years ago, so she's used to the, shall we say, exposure. Of course they planned it! Why else would the pastie exist? Why else would she stand in an assumed pose when it happened and not cover up? Timberlake dated Spears who has upstaged everybody with the Madonna tongue exchange. These two had to one-up that. What better way to do it than on worldwide TV using a break-away piece of material? MTV being itself. What should be surprising about that? Who would have expected anything else? In the future, whoever manages those types of event contracts should have a clause denying payment or proceeds or future participation in those types of outcomes.

The two of them got just what they wanted! Think of the thousands of people who today are searching the internet for the pic and are downloading their music and buying their CDs. But, I thought the farting horse was much more interesting.
• Weeeeellllll. I guess that this removed all doubt that Michael and Janet are one in the same!
• Here, here for the horse commercial !!!!
• Heck with Janet Jackson! Did anyone catch the Lingerie Bowl? (or even admit to it if they did?)x;-)
• I did sit through the whole half time show and I'm still wondering why! That was the tackiest, most tasteless half time show I have ever seen. Between the guys grabbing their crotch and Janet showing her boobie, what's left for "family" viewing?? Shame on whoever produced that one!
• Missed it. But then again anything concerning the Jacksons is getting boring. In any case, the Times reported that she was wearing something so that her breast really wasn't completely exposed.
Nothing like being prepared for a surprise.
• What she was wearing was a nipple ring. (ouch!)
• Half time is the only part of the stupid err super bowl that I did watch and other than kid rock I found it quite entertaining. So another Jackson goes in for shock value big whoop...I found it rather amusing.
• I missed the exposure but heard my friend gasp when she saw it as she watched with her children and the other children there. I thought I'd die when my nephew came in and said "Auntie, I saw Janet Jackson's boobie!"

I was watching something on TV this morning (yes, I took Superbowl Monday off from work) and the TV guy said that she hasn't had a hit in so long and surprise, surprise, the first single from her new album was released today.

The whole thing was terrible because of the arena she chose; if it was ten o'clock and on MTV, well, that is clearly not TV meant for children. But the Superbowl is a family event. Heck, in Boston it was a holiday!
• >I was watching something on TV this morning
>(yes, I took Superbowl Monday off from work)

So you joined the six percent of the US work force and called in today, huh, rad? I always thought you were made of sterner stuff. x;-)

• Nah, I didn't call in, I planned this day off! x:D
• Hey Rad, congrats. I have to say I'm deeply dissapointed in our loss. I'm a big Carolina fan and have been to many games the past three years. We all know about what-if's, but I wish Fox hadn't gone for the two points. If he hadn't, that game ending field goal would have most likely tied the game instead of winning. Carolina would have had two more point and the Pats probably would not have gone for two.

In regards to the half-time show, I'm more dissapointed in the behavior that Justin Timberlake is promoting. Are the children that saw that going to think it is OK to rip a girl's shirt off? I'm with Don, fine the hell out of everyone!
• LAST EDITED ON 02-03-04 AT 09:21AM (CST)[br][br]Watching the re-run of it all tonight on various channels, her costume reminds me of the one her odd brother used to wear....total black, skin tight, with a white diaper thing or jock strap contraption on to accentuate.....what else? It is all the fault of the public. Trash sells. Sex sells. Sex sells Jacksons. We can't pray at school, but we can show this on television to our children.

(Edit P.S.) There's one boob we are all leaving out of the equation, and that's Paul Tagliaboob, NFL commissioner. He should be personally fined. He had an approving role in giving halftime to MTV, had a role in approval of the tooting horse, and had initially approved the halftime lingerie show. I suppose if Larry Flynt had outbid MTV, it would have even been cranked up another notch. People have to be impacted where it matters, the pocketbook. And it needs to start at the top.
• Don you are absolutely right. The buck should start at the man at the top and then trickle down the ranks.

I heard this morning that the FCC hasn't fined anyone in at least the past 20 years for offensive language or leud behavior on tv...or ever. And I understand that the fines (if they were ever to be levied) are so minimal that the broadcast companies write them into their budgets as a production expense (just in case).
• I thought the retinal review was much more important than the stupid bowl. Hey look at it this way, Janet's boobie made the TV but can you imagine the hoopla if the streaker would have made TV?? It was all staged...all set up...no freakin accident. Justin got back at Bratney for the Madonna tongue incident, he fondled Janet on TV with MILLIONS watching. How close are we to Porn on regular TV?
• TOO close, in my opinion. What do you expect when slut-makers are given the opportunity to produce the show? As in many households across the country, children also were watching (in our case, ages between 6 and 12)--how do you explain THAT to those kids? Then, the lame exuse of "costume malfunction" . . . and, of course, the media is keeping it going!
• This was no accident as has already been stated. I say lets go back to marching bands at half-time, at least those are tastful. Heck when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy played their jazz selection a few years back, that was great.

As has been stated on numerous shows, this is the first and last time MTV gets to produce a half0time show. The idiots in the NFL who signed that contract should have known better and should be kicked thru the goal post of life!

I do have to agree with Rush on another point, during regular season play half-time is only 15 minutes long. During the Super Bowl it's 30 minutes and the players loose their rythm. I say keep half-time to 15 minutes and get on with what matters....THE GAME. Wacko Jacko's sister & whomever else they have at half-time is as much a waste as the cheerleaders!!
• I would have a much harder time trying to explain to my child why it would be alright for a man to rip a woman’s clothing exposing and violating her personal space and privacy than what a naked breast is. Breasts are not dirty, they are not disgusting, they are not the highly sexualized objects that our society has made them. Breasts are breasts and are a part of our bodies just as arms or legs are.

If this act was staged, then I am highly disappointed in all involved. It was a cheap thing to do. If this act was not staged and it truly was a costume malfunction, then shame on Justin (for deliberately going for that area, why else would he have gone RIGHT THERE?). I must tell you, I am not impressed with Mr. Timberlake. In addition to this occasion, I have seen him place his hand on the buttocks of another female he was performing with and from what the female said, this was not part of their act. I do not think he respects women, their personal space or their bodies.

I have seen the clips from the half time show and to tell you the truth, I am not shocked or disgusted with Janet’s breast. Was it appropriate for that time slot? Of course not but the fact of the matter is that the sight of a naked female breast was not the disgusting. It was the behavior of the male, Justin. In a very deliberate act, he tore the clothing off a female. Does no one else see this as violent and threatening behavior? He totally and completely disrespected Janet. Why is his behavior not being discussed on every TV station, every radio, around every water cooler in this country?

• I'm not so sure she was disrespected, something tells me she was a willing participant and LOVED the publicity. But you're right, she should not promote that behavior. I don't think Justin is the only one at fault here. He is young and inexperienced, she has been in the business a very long time.

I don't think anyone has taken exception with the breast itself, but maybe some have and that's their perogative. Not everyone is comfortable with seeing another woman's body. Seeing a breast does not bother me if it is in the appropriate arena - a movie, even MTV. But it downright shocks me when I'm watching a football game with a 6 year old.
• LAST EDITED ON 02-03-04 AT 01:39PM (CST)[br][br]Janet was wrong. Justin was wrong. CBS was wrong. MTV, who produced it, was wrong. Viacom, who owns CBS and MTV, were wrong. Everybody is claiming innocence, but I've read elsewhere that Janet and Justin planned it just as it happened right after the last rehearsal. I've also read that the FCC official responsible for censorship was watching with his younger children and he was highly offended. He is planning on action that will hit everyone involved and who should have had better control.

edit: It is my understanding that MTV announced that something shocking would happen. Guess we should have paid more attention - they were warning us.
• If you look closely at her costume prior, there's a red camisole (sp?) under the black leather. It appears the black leather was to come off, leaving the red camisole behind. Unfortunately for everyone involved, that didn't happen. They both looked pretty surprised at the outcome of their little show.

As for Janet being disrespected, I can't buy it. C'mon, she had a tear away top on for goodness sake, and for her to be in that place at that time just as he sings, "I'm going to have your clothes off before the end of this song," or some such nonsense is more than a coincidence. I really don't know what all the fuss is about - they were grinding each other all over that stage - be offending by that! I turned away long before the song was over and went to the next party we were expected to, thereby missing the drama.

The NFL is shocked?!?!? PUHLEASE! This is the league with half naked cheerleaders which started out the season with Britney Spears in a nude colored outfit grinding it out with four or five male dancers. The only reason that can get away with the outrage is because half the world was watching this broadcast, and not the first one.
• My unemployed b#$% is sitting at home and I just saw, on MTV, a statement from Janet saying that she takes full responsibility and that the move was brought up after rehearsals so that noone but she and Justin knew it was going to happen.
Oh boy
• If that's the case, I think the director of the FCC ought to strike a deal with ASCAP (or whomever) to assess fines against Janet Jackson and whatzisface in the form of 50% of all their royalties for the next twelve months. I'll bet that would get their attention. Works for me. x:-)
• They could then donate the proceeds to an appropriate charity. How about the NEA. x:o
• I read on a blog that the FCC is considering increasing the fines by tenfold. It is currently $27,500. Then assessing the fine to all parties involved including local stations that ran the show hoping the little guys will put the pressure on the big guys.

Beagle's idea works for me, too.
