Exempt vs Non-Exempt Sick Leave

For those of you that still have sick leave, just curious as to how you differentiate sick leave of exempt and non-exempt employees if at all. Do your exempt employees accumulate sick leave based on time worked or are they simply given X number of days each year. Also are they allowed the same amount of days as your non-exempt employees? Currently our non-exempt employees earn one full day of paid sick leave (8 hours) for each full month worked up to a maximum of 30 days. Our exempt employees start out with 30 days of paid sick leave and are given a full 30 days at the start of each calendar year. Just doesn’t seem fair to me so I am rockin’ the boat a bit on this topic.

That is quite a generous policy! 30 days per year?! Our exempt and non-exempt full-time people earn 5 sick days per year accrued at a rate of 1.25 days per quarter. Time can be used before it's earned. Time is forfeited when someone terminates or, if they've used time that wasn't earned, the adjustment is made on their final payroll.

Exempts have 5 days sick leave per year with no carry over. No sick leave for non-exempts.

We've always had an extremely generous sick leave policy. It's the same for exempts & non-exempts, starts after six months of employment, and is awarded at the beginning of each year based upon the length of employment. It starts at 1.25 days per month (15 days per year) and the amount increases every ten years or so. If you stick around for 21 years or more you end up with 40 days per year! There is no carryover allowed from one year to the next, but non-exempts are paid out at the end of the year for a portion of their unused sick time.

1.8462 hours per pay period; 26 pay periods per year; 6 days per year. Exempt and non-exempt are the same. Carry over is allowed from year to year with a maximum of 480 hours in a sick leave bank. The sick leave bank has no accumulated value at time of resignation or termination. If the associate resigns before the time is accounted for then monies would be withheld from last payroll check (if possible).

8 hrs per month/12 days per year for all regular-status employees. Can use while on Trial Service. No cap on accrual, carries over for duration of employment, but not paid out at termination of employment.

6.75 hours per month (about two weeks per year). Same for exempt and non-exempts. No cap on accumulation and you can carry it over from year to year.

All management and office personnel get 5 days per year, exempt or not. Available on January 1st and use or lose by December 31st.

All employees earn 4.28 hours per pay period for a total of 12.84 days annually. Carries over annually with a cap of 480 hours. Upon separation 1/3 of balance paid out.
