The Famous..or Infamous Don D.

This morning I was in Rapid city, South Dakota kicking off the 2003 South Dakota State SHRM Conference. I was the beginning key note speaker and did "Running With the Big Dogs - How To Make HR a Strategic Player. Whenever I speak to SHRM groups, at the end of my presentation, I always put up the Employers Forum website address and explain what a wonderful help it is to all HR professionals. (I hope it has helped grow our numbers and broaden the experience available to all of us.) A man in the back of the room raised his hand to ask a question. When I called on him, he asked me if I'd ever met Don D. in person! I laughed and encouraged everyone to sign on and get a flavor for the vast HR knowledge that was available on The Forum as well as experience Don D. in full living color! I thought you'd all want to know!

Perhaps Don D. should be made the centerfold for The Forum. Maybe strategically posed by the bottle tree!

I'll pass on the top-water stuff. I want you to buy me airline tickets to a couple of these events and you can set me in a ladder-back chair on the side of the stage as a prop or visual effect. I'll do anything on command if I'm appropriately compensated. Chicken wings and beer work just as well as cash.

Alright, I harrassed Don D. recently because he didn't understand my Wisconsin lingo. I've "seen" others picking on him and giving him a hard time, which, from what I've observed, he deserves. Everybody in this group needs to help me out by letting me know what makes Don so famous. Is it his wit, his talent, the fact that he has almost 3,000 posts in these HR sites which proves he's getting paid for surfing the internet daily, (which is pretty enviable, actually). Please, lay it on the line and don't hold back. What makes him SOOO special? x:o

This is a non-compensated endorsement. Not only does Don D have extensive knowledge in a lot of areas, his unique ability to express himself is what sets him apart. Many many times when reading a post I have ideas for responses run through my head and I begin to wonder how I can verbalize them only to scroll down and see that he has already so eloquently and most of the time humorously done that.

That was me who asked you that and I must say, I was surprised when you said no! By the way, your presentation was great and I heard nothing but good reviews during the rest of the conference! Unfortunately, I picked the state conference over the National conference in Orlando...maybe that's a good thing?
And now that someone mentioned it...how does Don get paid for surfing the web all day????

Where do people get off thinking I surf the net all day. I have said before that I am a superb multitasker. I don't do this forum nearly as often as I used to. I check in normally about 7 in the morning and throughout the day. I keep it minimized to meet my addiction and get automatic bells and whistles when there's a post I'm interested in and it takes maybe 10 seconds to read a post and another 20 to respond. By the way, I'm working while some people are flitting about the state and country sleeping in king sized beds at SHRM conferences and other functions 'critical'(?) to their jobs. One might ask 'How does one get paid for doing that?'x:-)

One has to have 20 plus years of HR experience, be willing to expose their career mistakes (and a success or two) for others to learn from, have a few funny stories to tell and last but not least, be a princess and not a curmudgeon!

Well, let's see. I've got over 30 years experience in the field, perfectly willing to roll out tons of personal mistakes and the few successes along the way, can on occasion tell a funny story or two, will work for food, so I might qualify, but I'm no princess. Not even a prince. But I was referring to the guy with all those initials who asked how I get paid for surfing. You were there working for a living. He was eating on an expense account and chilling down cold beer up in his room.

Thank you for your kind words. Increasing the respect for HR is a subject very near and dear to my heart! The SHRM President asked me if I'd come back next year. I told her absolutely! If they do ask me to return, I hope to see you again.

By the way, since we are two of the few Forumites to meet face-to-face, I think I should tell everyone one else that you are a dead ringer for Harrison Ford!

Sounds like a terrific idea. Just picture it, Don D in just a HR Forum tee shirt, sitting demurely on his bike next to his bottle tree. Come on Don, you can do it. I bet ya a dozen donuts it would make the Emploment Law Newsletter. They might even ask you to scribble down some words of wisdom to go under the picture. That should put those Forumites, that question your motives,in their place.
