Here are a couple that repeat in my mind as I go through life:
(I believe this is from the book, "Tuesdays With Morrie") - "Work like you don't need the money; dance like nobody's watching; and love like you've never been hurt."
"I never learned anything while I was talking," Larry King.
LAST EDITED ON 12-04-02 AT 10:27AM (CST)[p]This is my all time favorite quote and I apply it not only to my personal life but my professional one as well.
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

If I can I'd like to add another. This is a personal one that I came up with some years ago. It annoys me to no end when people get so bogged down in processes that there is never an outcome. Or when things never come to closure because one or more managers remains hopelessly mired in details. So, my often used suggestion on these occasions and in training sessions is, simply:
****NEVER LET THE PROCESS BECOME THE OBJECTIVE.****
One that we find useful---especially to get someone to open up---is to comment on something obvious and then say,"Well, the more something goes without saying, the more it needs to be said." People then feel, gee, maybe I should say what is on my mind after all.Regards from Texas,Mike Maslanka

Part of the secret of a success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside. --Mark Twain

Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you've never been hurt and live like it's heaven on Earth. --Mark Twain

A friend of mine gave me this piece of advice for dealing with my children--and I try to keep it in mind for dealing with my "children" at work--Be fair, be firm, and be consistent. Two quotes from my father that I keep in mind-- "The sun will not shine on the same pig's a#% all the day long." "If a bullfrog had wings he wouldn't bump his rump." (How I hated hearing that one when I was growing up and would start in with 'but if....'!)
Sayings I picked up along the way: "Open your mouth and expose your brain." "Its not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it’s the size of the fight in the dog."
Signs I bought and always have around: "Only Yourself can bring you peace." "Sometimes I sits and thinks, other times I just sits."
From the Brama Kumaris: "Om, Shanti (I am a peaceful soul)!"
The best from my Dad: "It is a smart person who learns from their mistakes, but it is a smarter person who can learn from the mistakes of others."
Two favorites - from Michelangelo: "The greatest danger for most of is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it."
And from Jim Ryan: "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going."
Mary M with Harley: You are just who I've been looking for! I slap forgot to put one thing on my list to Santa last week. So, will you please ship me a new Harley right away to my home address? I will try to pay later.
