>Just being fat or overweight is not a disability under ADA. True, but depending on the mindset of the employer and the coworkers, it can land the employee in that wonderworld called "regarded as disabled", where you aren't actually disabled b…

Unless S.C.'s work comp laws are very unusual, this is still work comp. It's not a new injury, it's a continuation or reoccurrance of the previous injury. Unfortunately, the change in carrier makes it a new case for them, and it will probably advers…

>Reference checking >interupts my day - I can't schedule for it - and >the quicker I get off the phone and on to >something new (for current employees) the >better. Agreed, but checking references on people I want to hire …

I figured Don would have weighed in by now.

I guess it depends on how much you want to add to the HR community. Look, if a guy is fired for assaulting his boss, you don't think that should be revealed? What if he admits to embezzling $100,000? What if he's a great employee whose value to the…

I think it's a shame so many of you have such ungrounded fear.

IF I have a signed release, I'll tell them anything that is: Documented in writing, True to the best of my knowledge, and Relevant (IMO) to future employment. The state of Missouri provides very specific protections to you if you follow these g…

>>WOCO: What kind of business are you in that requires periodic background checks on current employees? We own and operate a chain of convenience stores, among other ventures. The vast majority of our employees are retail cashiers who must ri…

Are there any statements on the application regarding your intent to verify the information given?

Do you have consent forms signed by the existing employees?
-
You only have to provide the copy if you DON'T hire them because of what's on the check, I believe.

Why do women have to have such filthy bathrooms, anyway? Sincerely, Felix Unger

Every day's a party on the Forum, Don!

I know I'm jumping in late, but that never stopped me before... Deez, I would be a bit concerned about the manager of your store. It sounds as if he/she was against being open, and that's always a red flag for me. A good retail manager is always …

You know, I was titillated by the subject heading and now I feel cheated. I was morbidly curious to learn what illness your employee was sharing with his/her coworkers, and whether it could lead to hiring a company urologist.

Also, check with your trade association(s), if applicable, to see if there is an association-approved/recommended vendor. You can often get better rates that way. If nothing else, the association brass or other members can give you some excellent re…

BTW - I hope James sells a million of those books. I would be hard-pressed to put a value on this website.

They may not be, Don. I'm sure it's only a break-even proposition.

But he said he would "check it out" later. Surely he meant that on his next visit to the public library, he would obtain a copy for a 2-week perusal.

Having been the Director for 4 years now, I'm actively looking to step back into "Generalist". Seriously. If I get my act together in the next few days, I may post my resume here so you good folks can take some shots at it and tell me what you thi…

I would hazard a guess that many excellent people in HR had the position "plopped" on them in the beginning. Let's face it... on Career Day in 5th grade, how many of you said "I want to be a Human Resources Generalist"?

>>Don said: >>Reach for a parachute. Your current plight is hopeless. Haha! Leave it to Don to provide that extra cheer you need in troubled times.

My "retention" report is actually a seniority report. I provide average seniority by job class, and by location (we have about 30 locations). While high seniority and low turnover usually go hand-in-hand, it isn't always the case. For example, I hav…

I've had four people "turned in" in the past month or so. 2 clean, 2 dirty. But I always test them, no matter how strange the call.

Terry touches on a good point... so much of HR is "past practice". Things an ADP clerk does today out of convenience or misinterpretation can become policy de facto tomorrow. Is that how they want it?
-
I don't know what a "total package" would cost. In each and every case where I've seen them bid a payroll and/or benefits adminstration program, the total cost has been HIGHER than what it was internally, and with slower response times. One sellin…

In my relatively limited experience with ADP, I have not seen them do anything that couldn't be done more effectively by internal HR. They may be able to do some things cheaper, but not always.

I worked for a company that had a "use it or lose it" policy on vacation, UNLESS you were asked to postpone due to business necessity. One year, I was asked to postpone mine three times! My family ended up going to the Smokey Mountains without me. T…
