Free annual background checks? That's great! I'm not sure my state does that, but I will check around. I couldn't find anything on their website, so I will have to make some phone calls. Yes - I should probably add something like "excluding min…

I ran the policy past an outside HR expert, who advised (similar to what you said mbeam) that we insert the rationale for having such a policy. This policy is being added to our handbook: "XXX seeks to ensure the safety and well-being of the indiv…

We've considered conducting new background checks every year, but figured out it would be too expensive. I just put together this policy: "Employees are required to inform the Human Resources Director of any criminal arrests, charges, and convicti…

I am having a similar problem. (Not with HR staff, but with all staff.) We issued a bonus, the employees talked to each other, and many got upset that their bonus was not as much as someone else's bonus. What was intended to reward staff and improv…

Yes. We determined they are exempt under the "learned professional" classification. They are teachers with 4 year degrees.

We've decided to make the employee exempt, so now we don't have to worry about for paying them for time spent in class. The HR consultant never ended up giving me an answer to my question; I think maybe he wasn't sure. Thanks for you feedback.

That was my question too actually. The controller said we'll just have them sign a document when they are hiredpromising to submit payment to us if there isn't enough in their final check to withhold it from them. I'm not sure how well we'll be …

So it looks like we've settled on the following policy: "Employees designated as Full-time Certified Teaching Employees will be paid their salary over the course of a full year. However, actual earnings are determined based on days worked. A Full…

Yes, I'm pretty sure they are exempt under the "learned professional" exemption because they have to have a 4 year degree and an early childhood education teaching certificate. They also meet the base pay requirement. Please let me know if you thi…

I should have mentioned in my original posting...these are SALARIED non-exempt employees. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Our policy is similar. The employee must show us proof of their coverage, then we give them an insurance buyout equal to 25% of what we would have had to pay for them. Our rationale for doing this is that if an employee and their family can be c…

Yes, I've told my boss that it seems discriminatory. And he's finally agreed, but we are still wondering about any other restrictions or rules against doing this for ALL the laid-off staff (if we can't afford it this year, hopefully we can next yea…

Thanks for the confirming what I thought. But I still can't find any official confirmation. The HR Director tells me we have no Summary Plan Description for the Med/Dep Care Expense Reimbursement Plan. The actual plan document makes no mention o…
