• Paul, I like the one about the facination with the fingernail. I too have had many meetings where all kinds of things suddently become so interesting (shoes, dirt speck on wall, the hum of the water machine)
• Here are two from our popular phone-in excuses: I can't get to work My car is broke and won't work And my soap is on Can't get in today My wife just found us again This time she might leave Anyone else get these?
• Well, we know what Don isn't doing!!
• Thanks. that is a creative way of looking at it.
• This forum needs spell check! I cannot type to save my life. I am used to the page lighting up like a Christmas tree!
• One would think the chances of this would be slim, but it is amzing what falls through the crack - not wiht me of course There are some peopel who have nver certified. What a mess. thanks!
• With a V.P. it can by a touchy situation. However, I would call him and ask if he is aware of FMLA. What will the comany do if he uses all of his sick and vacation time? Also, if he is sick, and the illness has required him to be out for the past tw…
• No, I certainty didn't mean to imply that serving in the armed forces would be a vacation. And I can totally understand why a person would need some time with his or her family after having been away for a long period of time. My apologies if I off…
• Sandra, thanks for the idea. I will think about offering 2-3 weeks, but again, worry about what will happen the next time an associate asks for some time off. Hopefully there will not be too many more employees called to serve, but I also wonder if…
• Pictures or character drawings. I have some of people covering their eyes and mouths as if they do not want to witness of hear what may be considered as harassment. I also have a picture of a man (presumably the supervisor) touching a woman's shou…

• Good call - we will use sexual oreintation rather than sexual preference. It didn't even occur to me that we could offend our assocaites. Thanks.
• Thank you for the suggestions. The problem I have is that there is not a big budget and I would have to have a video for every location - over 100 seperate facilities.
• That is actaully what I used until we hired on this person who speaks Spanish. The problem is that she is fluent, but there are still some words - especially when it comes ot HR terms and Beneift legal language that she is unsure of either the word …
• I may be mistaken, but if the infomraiton is all related to a workers comp claim then you may be okay. Workers comp does not fall under HIPAA. It would be another stroy if the infomration was out there prior to anyone having mentioned workers comp.…

• I agree. As the person responsible for ensuring our company is in compliance with the HIPAA regulations, I am fairly positive this would be a bad idea. I would try and communicate that this practice should stop before 4/14. Also, if any of those i…
• I thought you meant a Replublican was going to beat him up the Office Dork..
• Our company has both machines in the restroom and they are very much appreciated. The machines have always been stocked whenever I have been in a bind. It allows employeews to focus on work and not have to worry about running to Walgreens.
• Thanks agian everyone. I really do like this site and all of the great advice I get.
• I found another question on the application... Have you had any arrests? If so, what was the nature?
• Nope, not an FBI application....would you believe a stocker in a warehouse?
• I agree that the spce it may take up is small, but I wanted to find out if it is permissable. I have several HR managers asking me before I told them they could, I wanted to verfiy. I will mention that as long as they have the space to retain the do…
• What if she went out due to a medical situation - for example, she needed bed rest to ensure a noraml delivery? She was told she didn't qualify for FMLA so I guess we can't count it now - tod bad!
• We too require employees to wear the appropriate hosiery with open toed shoes. However, there are several departments who do not enforce this policy very strongly. I will admit that I would love to see this policy change. Open toed shoes with stoc…
• I'll tell you what, after I have had a chance to review the information I receive, I will put in into an electronic format and e-mail it to anyone who would like it. My e-mail is clabaugh.meghan@corp.sysco.com For those of you who w…
• That is what I thought. Thanks all!
• I remember one of the first e-mail I received from my supervisors stating, “please f-u.” I was thrown for a minute until I realized she wanted me to follow-up on the attached e-mail.
• I agree with "HR Beginner" in that long fingernails should fall under a dress code policy. Our company policy lists what is considered appropriate dress but also included the line "professional attire and grooming." I have seen a few people with ex…
• I am actually studying for the shrm exam and have a textbook that I am reading. In it, the definition for Human Resource Management is "the function that assists organizations in achieving goals by obtaining and maintaining effective employees....3 …
• Sharon, I have just been introduced to the wonderful world of adverse impact and the software needed to calculate if it exists. I have software but it is copyrighted and that could get us in trouble...however, I obtained it from the EEAC (Equal Em…
• I agree with you that if the documents were not signed in the presence of the employee, then the document should not have been signed at all. At my company, if an employee refuses to sign an action plan, or warning, then we simply document "employee…
