Definition of parent in Illinois

I have an employee who got married to a woman with children and thinks the marriage certificate is enough to legally make him the parent ot guardian of her kids under Illinois law. We have always used birth or adoption as the only way to become a legal parent. Can anyone clarify and/or point me to specific law in Illinois?

I'm having a hard time finding IL FMLA rules, but the federal guidelines state that son or daughter is a "biological, adopted, or foster child, a stepchild, a legal ward, or a child of a person standing in loco parentis..." So, I'd say they're covered.

I think they are too for the purpose of FMLA but not clear if that was the question. .

Welcome to the forum! If you are asking for FMLA purposes, then yes, as the other posters said, they'd be covered. Other than that, I think your answer depends on the reason you're asking - is there a specific situation you're dealing with?
