  • The type of business you are in sometimes determines how strict you must be. For instance, we are owned by a hospital and use their criteria. Essentially that means employees must be present for scheduled hours 95% of the time. Anyone exceeding 5% unscheduled absences in a quarter is subject to 'corrective action.' This excludes FMLA, jury duty and bereavement leave. Consecutive days out are treated as one incident.

Tardiness depends on the department (people who answer phones are held to a higher standard than those who just come in, do a job and leave). Therefore we don't have a specific policy on disciplinary action as it depends on the circumstances. Also, most of our employees are exempt, and are in general given more flexibility. Hourly employees are not docked unless they are 8 minutes late (7 minute rule coming and going). Tardiness is rarely an issue here so it has not become a problem.

    Hope this helps.

  • We are in manufacturing - so we have office professionals as well as hourly assemblers - (small company)

Each person has a schedule - if they are 1 minute late - they are late and it is noted. This even applies to exempt people, who are not happy about it. Weather is not considered a reason to be late.

There are 3 verbals, then we start the written process of which there is 4 steps with time off for the last 2 before termination. If they go 6 months w/out incident - there is record is clear and start over - no matter what their last step was.

Mostly not an issue except for 3 people out of 42 - but beware - there is a lot of angst from exempt people. It is much stricter then most people have ever had to go by.

One of our founding beliefs is that we are a company of our word and that includes being on time for work.

They are allowed to change their start time - except for a few who need to be here to answer phones or because they are the only person who can do a specific job.
  • Financial - we do not consider an ee tardy unless they are late by 5 minutes or more when clocking in to start the day or returning from their meal break. They are allowed one tardy per week. If they are tardy 5 or more times within a four week period, the issue is addressed through our discipline program. Ee's being tardy has not be an issue for us for quite some time.
