How are # of posts counted?

Just curious, how are the number of posts counted? I noticed a recent poster had "8 posts" then farther down the thread he posted again and it said "8 posts" and then again, and so on.

Why didn't the number of posts go up each time he posted? Does it differentiate between a post and a reply?

Its just one of those things I wonder about...

Post counts throughout a thread will update each time someone posts a message. 8 posts in your example would be correct. The next time that person posts, all posts in that thread will update to say 9.

This may be different in other threads or older posts by that user because pages are only updated when someone posts or when we run a board update (which can take a while since there are so many posts on this board).
