A Failure to Communicate

I had an applicant I was screening on the phone. I asked if he had been convicted of any felonies and this is what I thought he said:

"Yup, when I was younger, they got me for

'court evasion.'"

I answered, "court evasion?"...thinking perhaps he ignored a subpoena....he kept saying, "No, court evasion, court evasion." After going back and forth several times, I finally understood that he meant "cultivation" -
growing marijuana!

How about you? Any similar communication failures?

Here's a failure to communicate, (sorry, I'm in a mood today). . .

When I hire people and I express our stringent attendance policy and they say, "I'm very dependable and you'll never have a problem with me", I didn't realize that they really meant "hire me, hire me, I'm never going to make it four days in a row on time, but hopefully I'll slip through the cracks".

I need a lie detector or something hooked to their chair, can I get away with that?

Lets just say when we implemented our drug screen program (close to 15 years ago), we gave everyone plenty of notice! We did have a few people resign before the program went into place.

Back in the 70s when I was growin' dope, I never considered myself cultivating and didn't think of myself as a Delta Planter (that's what we call sodbusters in the MS Delta where I grew up). I just looked at it as another way to pay off the Sears card. x}> And we all learned that horse droppings would burn up a good stalk quicker than turpentine would have. :~~

Oh for the good old days when the Smothers Brothers were being censored by CBS, but Leigh French (on the show) would do a routine about roaches (and it got on the air because the censors thought she was talking about cockroaches).

Communication gap? I had an employee call and tell me one of her co-workers would be late because he was going to choir practice. Turns out he went to the chiropractor.
