Does Size Matter?

Just read an article that says taller people do indeed earn more money. On average, $789 per inch. With height comes a perception of authority and with authority comes additional compensation. So, for example, a taller car salesman would earn more because they are perceived as more knowledgeable and authoritative and therefore will close more deals.

Maybe we should track height in our HR databases. Waddyathink?

I wanted to run the other way when I saw the title of the thread, but -- like not being able to look away from a bad car accident -- I had to see what it was all about. In my company, though, the height rule doesn't hold true. But I think that's because the owner is kind of a little guy himself.

Beagle, you've been kind of quiet. I knew that would get your attention. So, your owner has a Napolean complex? I remember years ago one of our short supervisors, he was probably no more than 5'6" wanted to go nose to nose with another supervisor. So, he stood on a pallet and was wagging his finger at him. It was hillarious.

My boss is an owner so I don't see his payroll, but from what I can figure on the P&L and based on our height differences, he makes about $13,000 per inch more than me.

Apparently size DOES matter. Well, AND work and life experience, willingness to take risks with your own capital, etc.!

I'm 5'1" and am used to dealing with people who are taller than me and I'm not easily initimidated by height. x:D I've had many a standoff with a former manager who was more than a foot taller than I, with my neck craned waayyy back to keep that eye contact. I do tend to wear heels a lot though!

My husband likes that I'm too short to see what he perceives as his bald spot. x:D

5'2" - I'm sure it has cost me millions. And I knew what this thread was all about the second I saw the subject - because I heard the same news item on the Today show this morning, so I know it must be true. What else could anyone have been thinking about? x;-).

I worked for a real estate developer gentleman that was 5 foot nothing. When he got angry with the land development supervisor, who was 5' 11", the owner would open the bottom drawers of his desk, stand in them, so he could yell down at the supervisor. I witnessed this once and had to leave the room so I did not laugh and the wrong time. The owner always said with wink and a nudge that the extra skin had to go somewhere. I am sure I do not know what he meant.

I think the results also added that education and experience made up for the lack of size. At work, I find that to be true, however in personal experiences not so much x0:)

I read that article last week. I'm 5'4" and female so I am underpaid twofold! I always wear heels though, I'm hoping my boss thinks it is real height and gives me a raise.

I'm 5'3" - you probably noticed the 4" heals. These are the "equalizers." I'm paid as well as other supervisors. If those statistics are true, are we looking at yet another protected class!?

I have a feeling I hold the record for shortest person on the web. If I stretch, I get to 4'11". However, some people would say I have the biggest mouth. ;;) Biggest problem is finding pants I don't have to shorten by a lot (even in petites).
