Favorite state that you don't live in

As some of you know I am headed up to Vermont today. I think of it as my "real" home state. I swear I lose 10 years as soon as I cross the border. My heart is lighter, my limbs are lighter, my mind is at ease and full of happy thoughts.
Do any of you have a state or geographic location that does this for you?

Well, it's in a state - does that count? If it does - I love New Orleans. I've only visited twice (not during Mardi Gras), but long to go back. Walking through the streets, seeing the people, even the smells (some good, some bad) really affected me. I love that place.

I am from New Orleans and that is so good to hear that from you! Mayor Nagin has cleaned up the city (Meaning, no more trash in the French Quarter and it doesn't smell!)

I'm from that area, now in Houston, and usually get back for Mardi Gras each year. Does that mean that next year I don't have to wear my oldest, rattiest sneakers? I really won't step in anything when stepping off the sidewalk?

I keep trying to convince my husband to go there with me but he has only heard horror stories about people going during Mardi Gras. I keep telling him that he'd love to go down Burbon Street with lots of beads.

I, also, love Vermont. My younger daughter recently moved up there. But before that, if I needed somewhere to go to just relax it's been Vermont.

Vermont is also my relaxation state. I hope to buy a weekend home there soon. The sooner the better. Maybe I'll have a Forum party when I do. That way Don can through darts at me directly. x;-)

Jimmy Buffett refers to these places as Margaritaville. It doesn't have to be a real place but a state of mind. But my Margaritaville is truly Margaritaville - Key West. I cry every time I start the drive back up US1 to Miami (we fly in and of there...much cheaper). I'll never be able to afford to live there but a girl can dream!!

Colorado for me. It's as close to heaven as I can get when I'm up in the "Fourteeners" (14,000 feet elevation that is). The pine smell is heavenly too.

Charleston, SC. I haven't found a state that affects me that way, but Charleston is wonderful. Laid back, historical, fantastic food and a lot to do. The beaches are great, too. We wanted one last trip this summer but couldn't swing it. I'm sooo looking forward to next summer!

Western Montana - I was born in Missoula, and I always feel as if I'm "home" whenever I get back there (even though we moved to Minnesota when I was six months old!) I've always said that if I ever see a job opening in Kalispell, I'll be there in a heartbeat!

1st choice--definitely Colorado! That is a true escape for me--beauty, little worries, laid back attitudes. And definitely in the mountainous areas--Denver just doesn't do it for me.

2nd choice--Florida--Orlando, specifically. I'm a huge Disney nut and there is nothing better than visiting Walt's old stompin' grounds.

I'm not much of a California fan, (sorry, CA forumites) but I LOVE San Francisco. It's the polar opposite of Phoenix and I think it's that's what intrigues me. I once spent an entire day just wandering around Chinatown, marveling at the various shops and the "stuff" they sell that I'd never seen before.

Place I visit most and makes me the happiest? Omaha, Nebraska. I grew up there and my entire family is there.

The Maine coast does it for me. We have gone to the same spot for 15 years, usually make it there twice during the summer. I can be sooooo stressed, but as soon as I get out of the car and smell the ocean and hear the waves - it's instant relaxation. If I'm having a stressful day, I just sit back in my chair, close my eyes and dream of my spot in Maine. Now, I have the urge to just get in my car and drive there right now!!!!

I don't have a favorite state that I don't live in. I've lived in MN all my life, and whenever we travel, no matter how great the destination was, I'm always happier to come home.

Ashville, NC area and Colorado...Denver or Aspen. The clear, cool air that knocks the back of your head out. And the super beautiful scenery alongside the upward bound mountain roads in the Rockies and the Smokies. But, in a way, I agree that 'rounding the bend, coming back, is even more exhillarating, just to get back close to my secret places'. Soon I'll be attending a 6 day safety seminar in a hotel on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Riding the Amtrac down there since I haven't done that before. Six days on Bourbon Street with someone else's credit cards...Somebody has to make these sacrifices. Haven't walked the New Orleans streets in some years and want to recapture that also.

Definitely Maine, and the northern Maine coast specifically. I rent a cabin North of Bar Harbor about 30 miles. It's quiet, it's relaxing and there are wonderful creatures: whales, moose, puffins.

Really, one of the attractions is that it reminds of of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (without whales or puffins, but we have moose). It's like home without the responsibilities, although I am always glad to be home.

There's no place like South Dakota! Even after 20 years in the Air Force and travelling all around the world, I still came back to South Dakota. It won't be long and the lakes will be froze over awaiting the fish shack! Now doesn't that sound like fun?!?!

Oh yes....as Leslie mentioned, Las Vegas! By the way, where is one of our HR's from one of the hotels in Vegas? Can't you get us some good perks during our travels??? You know the income of an HR...a free room and buffet would be nice!

Over the last 14 months I have visited Ogunquit, ME, San Francisco, CA, Outerbanks, NC, New York, NY and Bennington, VT. I loved all of these places, all for different reasons. Some of the other suggested places have peaked my interest. Maybe they could be trips in the near future.

I love Hawaii. I lived in Hawaii for several years and miss it tremendously. The island has a wonderful relaxed Aloha spirit. Whenever I want to relax, I put on some Hawaiian music. I really felt at home there. (I'm originally from Indiana-go figure.)
