Names of towns?

After read one of the more seriouse posts, it got me thinking about the names of some of the town around here. One of the names is Climax and another is Coxsackie. You can get from one to the other in about ten minutes. What are some of the funny names of towns around you?

We don't have any really weird names, but the three towns in Oregon whose names I've always liked are Dufur, Rufus and Boring. x:-)

We have Hot Coffee, Nitta Yuma, Pantherburn, Iuka, Noxapater, Chimneyville, D'Lo, Mapdot, Slaughter and Boob City. Scuse me. That last one is a strip bar.

I think my favorite Texas town name is Cut and Shoot. That's one town.

Massachusetts doesn't have as "interesting" a selection but we have the pronunciation tricks - Assippini (A-sip-ini), Assawompset (just like you would guess), Leicester (Lester), Worcester (Woster), Scituate (Sit-u-at), Glouster (Gloss-ter) and Belchertown which new comers always try to change the name of after they have lived there a year or two.

Actually, I think it is pronounced Wooster. I agree that they don't have interesting town names, but they do have a great lake--Chargoggagogmanchuaggagochabunagungamog.

While the name Dodge City isn't funny I always get amused watching Gunsmoke reruns because Hollywood apparently didn't know that there are no mountains in Kansas!

Snowflake is at 5600 ft. and they actually do get some. It's supposed to be 109 today, but I don't think we're going to make it as it's 11 a.m. and ONLY 96.

Well, we have Comfort down the Highway a bit and of course just outside the San Antonio city limits is China Grove of Doobie Brothers fame! When I lived in MO in high school I always liked Tightwad and Peculiar.

Blue Knob, Desire, Drinker, Dry Tavern (don't think I want to live there), Gastown, Hooker, Lover and my favorite...Shy Beaver, PA.

You know though, I'm now a little dumbfounded by some of the other names I ran across:

Allen, Almira, George, Holly, Joyce, Bryant, Lyle, Roy...do you think some crazy settlers back in the old days sat around the campfire and said, "you know we need to name some towns around here - any suggestions?" And one guy, tilts his hat back as he's scratching his head and says, "well, I've got some brothers and sisters and a few cousins - why don't we use their names?"

The other thing I'm surprised about is how many "This is Jane. See Jane run." names for towns we have as well:

Robe
Cook
Sunrise
Sunset
Home
Surfside
Pacific Beach

There's actually a town in Iowa called Boondocks! However, it's not the names, it's the pronunciation around here that gets me. Iowa has Nevada (pronounced na-VAY-da), Madrid (MAD-rid) and Buena Vista (BYOO-na VIS-ta) county.

Then, in Nebraska, we have Norfolk, which is pronounced as Norfork. Tradition has it that the town was actually located on the north fork of a river, hence Norfork became its name, but an early mapmaker misspelled it. You can always tell a "ferriner" if a person actually pronounces it like it's spelled.

I'm in North Carolina. We also have Climax, in addition we have Toast, Low Gap, Deep Gap, Fancy Gap, & Duck. We also have the famous Pilot Mtn. or as it is referred to on Andy Griffith, Mount Pilot.x:7

I was actually in Duck, NC back in June. It is just the other side of Kittyhawk. There is a road near my home town named "Quit Your Bitchen Road". My mother always used to laugh when we drove by. I'm not sure what that says about my father.

There is also a town called Booneville, Beaver River, Rodman and Brown.

This is great. My parent own lake property in a town called Tightwad. The bank there was robbed 3 times in as many years. I think people thought it was funny to rob their bank.

Luckily it is close enough to Warsaw and Clinton that you are near civilization. We decided the population never changes from 14 because every time a baby is born, a man leaves town.

I always thought Belchertown, MA, was real funny when I was a kid...do you have to burp all the time to live there? We also have a town called Florida which is funny only becuase it is in Western Mass on the Mohawk Trail and gets lots of snow in the winter. The goofy drunken joke when I was in college not far from there was "Hey, look, its snowing in Florida!"

There is also a Florida, NY.

In NJ, I've always thought the towns, Buttzville, Coxstown and Tuckahoe to be a riot!
