bereavement policy

Hi,

One of our employee's grandmother was very ill and eventaully passed away. The employee was out for five day. We dont really have a bereavement policy implemetned and I wanted to consult in things to consider. We have sick and vacation time available. She was not on vacation and neither was sick. How should we handle this? Would someone please care to share your policy with me?

We have a bereavement policy that allows employees to take three days with pay. Any extra days come from their personal time. If you will give me your email address, I will be more than happy to send you a copy of our policy.

Our policy allows three days, but you must use your sick time.

We don't have a bereavement policy but allow employees to take sick time for bereavement of immediate family. Immediate family stops at the grandparents. Aunts, uncles, cousins, brother/sister in-laws are not included. Mother/Father-in-laws are included.

We offer up to three paid days, to be taken between the day of the death and the day of the funeral or successive days that include the funeral, for immediate family (mother, father, sibling, spouse, child, grandparent), up to three excused unpaid days for mother or father-in-law, and day of the funeral excused for brother or sister or grandparent-in-law.

We allow 3 days in state, 5 days out of state for immediate family members, grandmother would be included.

One day for those with which you have a surrogate relationship. Our biggest problem in this arena is in-laws are not considered immediate family members, so employees can take more days for this but must use sick or vacation time to cover the extra days.
