I-9 form changes

When an error is discovered on an I-9 form, how are corrections to be made? I have read that attaching a separate memo for each correction is necessary. Others say that as long as the corrections are clearly marked and properly dated, they can be made on the original form.

I guess no one has completed an I-9 audit and made corrections or maybe everyone else had no mistakes to correct on any I-9s?

I have also heard that a separate memo must be attached to each incorrect I9 to explain what the error was and how it was corrected. I had about 100 incorrect ones and was really dreading the whole process. An employment lawyer from Peoria, IL has since told me that as long as each correction or added piece of information is initialed and dated (by you or by the employee, depending on which section it is in), that is enough. Do not cross out or whiteout anything. Either way there is potential liability but this good faith effort and an "I'm sorry" might get you off the hook with an auditor.

Basically, weigh the liability against the hassle. I don't know if this is the right answer but I liked it better than the individual memo option.

Does anyone remember when the I-9 regulations went into effect?

Tom-The initial regulations went into effect in 1986, however, there was a six month period where enforcement was abated to give employers a chance to adjust to the new procedures, and because not all of the regulations were finalized.
