QA vx QC

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two titles, if any. I alsways thought they were used interchangeably but the Quality Manager is saying there is a distinct difference.

Also, does anyone have these as exempt positions?

  • Here's my feeble attempt: Quality Control was the original title. "Control" was important because processes (usually performed by humans) were continuously found to be out of spec, so other people (QC) had to enforce the spec by holding or rejecting product until corrections were made. "QA" is the product of quality processes being applied that reduce errors or out of spec products. "Assurance" is more sampling to verify that the process is within specifications. Does that make any sense?
Our QA inspectors are nonexempt; supervisors are of course exempt.

  • It does!

Sounds like QC is more at the end of the process and QA is alongside of it.

    Thank you!

Does ANYONE have exempt QC/QA people?
