holiday pay

if an employee is not scheduled to work on a company holiday, is the employer obligated to pay for the holiday., eg. the employee works sat to wed and the holiday falls on thurs and friday.

should the employer pay the employee for thurs and friday?

need answer ASAP.

It will depend on what your company policy is. There is not a Federal Law that states you have to pay anyone Holiday Pay. It is totally a "Benefit" provided by the company.

As with anything you have not dealt with in the past, you will be setting a precedent which you will have to maintain.

At our company, you only receive pay for the
holiday if you were scheduled to work. It "replaces" the pay the ee loses as a result of
not working because the employer elected to close. The ee working Sat to Weds didn't lose anything as a result of the closing.

As Popeye said, there's no federal rule addressing holidays at all. Maybe there is a NY law. But, don't we all agree that the best thing for morale is to award each and every employee pay for a recognized holiday, whether or not it fell on a scheduled workday? Won't that send the best message and reap the most reward for the company? In most cases, an employee gets a paid day off for a holiday whether or not it falls on a particular day. We even award holiday pay to the exempt high school worker who comes in three hours per day. She's only 16 and think of the (inexpensive) message this sends to her. Some of the things we aren't obligated to do pay the largest rewards in the long run.

Why not consider giving this employee two days off with pay? This way the employee gets the days off and is not penalized because of their work schedule.

Good idea, but I think it would better suit the company if the employer chose the days rather then the employee.
