Travel/overnight compensation for non-exempt employees

This area seems dicey. Two employees work an 8-hour day and then drive to another city that evening for meetings out of state that will last for two days. At the close of the meetings, they drive back to their homes/work depending on the hour of day. I know they must be paid between normal working hours even if the traveling/meeting time is on the weekends if it is between 8 and 5 (at least that is my understanding.) However, are they paid for travel time/sleep time etc. that is outside normal working hours? Also if they technically work seven 8 hour days, are they paid time and a half for anything over 40 hours? I've read about this, but it doesn't seem clear cut to me. Thanks for the help. I also read something that said that the driver is compensated, but the passenger isn't even if they are both involved in the meeting.
