per diem

I need suggestions for a "reasonable" per diem. The company pays for motel rooms if traveling more than 60 miles from base office. We have been arranging for the rooms and it's a NIGHTMARE. Any suggestions for per diem covering motel room expense as an overall company policy to use in all instances other than "corporate officers"? The thought would be to give an advance of $45-55 based on the geographical area a(some are higher than others). We don't care if they spend less than the fronted money; we just don't want to monitor the room arrangements. This per diem would be for construction workers. We'd verify that they worked the job and were present for the work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

At a previous employer, we were given a $75. per day advance to cover meals and lodging. The breakdown was as follows: Breakfast $6 Lunch $6 Dinner $13 Room $50. We were required to submit receipts for the room but not meals. If the room was over $50 we were reimbursed the difference upon returning. So if you liked Burger King or McDonalds, you actually could MAKE money by traveling.

Our policy is that we arrange for the room and rental car if needed, thus we know in advance what those expenses will be and can provide the traveling employee with enough money to cover those expenses. We have a daily meal allowance of $30.00 for all meals. We do not require receipts for meals. We do request the receipts for rooms, rental cars and other unexpected items that have to be paid.
