12 hour shifts

We are just starting a 12 hour shifts and need some guidance on holidays and how much time do they receive. Our shifts will be 3days and 6 hours on and the same off. Has anyone use this system before and willing to share.

    Where I used to work, we provided eight hours holiday pay to every employee no matter what shift they were on or whether or not they would normally be scheduled on the observed holiday.

    In addition to the holiday pay, we paid time and a half for all hours actually worked on the observed holiday. Our week started at 10pm on Sunday, but we did not split the day (10pm-12am was always attributed to the next day). If Monday were the observed holiday and an employee were scheduled to work from 10pm Sunday to 10am Monday, they would receive 8 hours straight time holiday pay and 12 hours at time and a half. If an employee were not scheduled on Monday at all, they would receive 8 hours holiday pay.

    The employees were overall satisfied with this arrangement and we did not have problems with coverage on holidays.

    We do not use that particular system, but we do have 12 hour shifts for our nursing department. They work three 12 hour shifts per week (sometimes overtime, if needed). When it comes to holidays, we pay according to the following schedule: for main holidays (whatever you decide are paid), they get 8 hours pay automatically. If they work the holiday, (we have it defined the times that are paid at time and a half)- for example- our holidays are paid midnight-midnight- so, if they come in at 6 pm on the holiday, they get paid 6 hours of time and a half pay, if they work 6 am-6pm on hte holiday they get 12 hours at time and a half- it works the same if the person works the night before the holiday- except they get paid midnight-6am time and a half.

    We have had 12 hour weekend shifts in the past. Our ee are paid for the holiday only if it occurs on their scheduled work day. They are paid for what their normal shift is for that day.
    The ee don't really like this but we see it as being fair.
