Hosting a Charitable Event Involving Gambling

[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 03-10-08 AT 02:33PM (CST)[/font][br][br]Hi. I'm new to the Forum and looking for advice. As HR Manager, I have been asked if it would be ok if a group of employees held a Texas Holdem card game on the premises after work. The buy-in would be limited to $20 pp and half of the winnings would go to charity. Seems innocent enough. Anyone have any experience with this? Thank you

Is gambling legal in your state?

Will there be drinking involved?

Do you allow other groups to use your premises (ie - union activity)?

If you answered no to the 1st or 3rd question or yes to the 2nd question I would suggest that you say no to the card game.

On premises, as in work site, workers'comp, overtime challenges, liability for slip and fall, allegation of cheating, bad pot splitting, loser (and there will be a few) identifying with Company site??
no.
pick a neutral site and let the company buy the chip and dip.

Check your state laws. I had a similar request and found for our state you have to meet the criteria of a charitable organization (which we didn't) as well as other restrictions. Also whether your organization is a public agency vs. private company and any restrictions related to such events.
