Privacy Laws on addresses

We have a company wide day timer that has all company used addreses in it and all employees have access to it. The owner of the company wants all employees addreses in it too. Is this against the privacy rules?

Don't know if it is legal or illegal. However, personally, I would not want my address accessible to everyone. Why does the owner of the company want to do this?

It's a control thing he wants to be able to get in touch with the employee at all times.

If he's an owner, maybe payroll could just run a report specifically for him. My bosses have asked for this type of information so they can send out personal holiday greeting cards. I've never met a boss or owner who wanted day-to-day access to home addresses though. Phone numbers, maybe, but I wouldn't post those publicly either.

What? He wants to go visit them? Tell him to provide his employees (at his expense) with cell phones and pay them to keep the phone on at all times. That's why I have a P.O. Box. It's not my employers business where I live. If my employer needs to contact me after hours, then he's free to leave a message on my voice mail. I'll return the call.

There are no 'privacy rules' that I know of, other than good sense rules of confidentiality. I agree with the other posts.

There is no privacy law in California specifically addressing this that I know of, but most employees would be understandbly nervous about having their personal information posted for all to see.

Prepare a report for the owner with home phone numbers and leave it at that. There is no logical reason to have personal info posted company-wide.

It also a good idea for line managers to have personal phone numbers for their employees in case of emergency.
