Fed Withholding Exemptions Limit

I have an employee who is single with one child, owns home, and who now wants to claim 9 withholding exemptions. Does anyone know what the withholding limit is? Thanks for your help.

  • Check your Circular E pamphlet from the IRS. If you don't have one, go to the IRS website under Forms & Publications.
  • I believe anything over 8 will trigger the IRS to question.
  • According to the Circular E for 2003, "Generally, you must send to the IRS copies of certain Forms W-4 received during the quarter from employees still employed by you at the end of the quarter. Send copies when the employee claims (a) more than 10 withholding allowances or (b) exemption from withholding and his or her wages woud ormally be more than $200 per week. Send the copies to the IRS office where you file your Form 941. You are not required to send any other Forms W-4 unless the IRS notifies you in writing to do so." This information is on page 14 of the Circular E. You do not have to do anything with the W-4 that your employee completed other than file it in your files.
