Electronic Storage of Personnel Records

Our company is considering storing all records electronically. I know there are limits that personnel records need to be kept. However, must they be kept for that time period in the original format or does electronic storage meet the requirements?

We were looking at this in the past, and I was told that you must have the original I9 and W4. They said that everything else could be kept electronically.
