Strategic HR and Small- to Mid-Size Companies

For those of you in HR roles at small- to mid-size companies, how are you tackling the need for a more strategic focus to HR management?  Are you looking at specific areas such as succession planning and preparing for future staffing needs, looking at data analytics?  Are there other areas you are focused on?
