Prescription Medication in Workplace
We have an employee who has been prescribed anti-depressants, some of which are controlled substances. We have noticed a pattern of tardiness and/or calling out sick due to side effects caused by these medications.
I'm not sure how to handle this. I don't want to violate ADA by asking her inappropriate questions regarding her medications. Can I take her through our progressive discipline process as I would with any employee that is excessively late/absent?
Our policy states that employees that are on prescribed controlled substances can report to work if they are taking medication as long as it does not adversely affect the staff member's ability to safely perform his or her job duties. Could we ask for her physician to clear her to work while she is on this medication?
Any advice on this topic would be appreciated! Thank you!
