Defining a PTO illness event for access to extended sick leave
We recently implemented a PTO program combining vacation and some of the previous sick leave benefit into one plan. Employees also accrue paid benefits in and extended sick leave account that can only be used after 3 days of illness/injury. Our policy also had a provision that states employees do not have to satisfy a new 3 day wait period before accessing the extended sick leave account if there is a relapse of the same condition within 7 days.
So...my question is this: If an employee is out to care for their ill child, and then becomes ill themselves, do you count that as 1 event for the 3 day wait to access the extended sick leave? What about if an employee is out to care for their ill child, comes back to work, and then becomes ill themselves, would you consider this a "relapse of the same condition"?
Thanks for your help!
