Qualifying Event?????

An employee's wife called me today questioning why we will not allow her daughter on the insurance coverage. Her daughter (24 years old) quit her full time job in August 2010, moved back home the same month but did not enroll in school full time until January 2011. She seems to think that the qualifying event didn't happen until the daughter enrolled in school. Am I missing something but to me the qualifying event happened in August 2010? Thanks!

I believe you are correct. The qualifying event was loss of coverage in August. Unless she opted for COBRA and is now a FT student, then she wouldn't be eligible excpet during an open enrollment period. You should check with your carrier, though, to make sure.

Check to see if your company has opted for a Grandfather status. If so under your existing status you would not have to add the daughter if your current SPD does not allow for it. If you do not have this status then you may have to add her regardless of when she became eligible because of her age.
