Privacy/Medical Absence

I have an employee whose wife has had complications with her pregnancy and he will need to be out for a few days. Am I breaking any privacy issues by passing this along to his supervisor?  I'm not telling the sup the details just that he will be out due to medical complications with his wife.

  • Normally I would just tell the sup that Mr. Smith will be absent due to a medical issue he must deal with.  I wouldn't say "medical complications with his wife" or in any way interefere with Mr. Smith's ability to control who knows what since there is no reason for the sup to have any details ont he matter.
