Innocent comment or trouble?

I overheard my colleague interviewing a recent college grad for our management training program.  He said to the applicant "you know, this would be a really good opportunity for you."

However, the department head went with other applicants.

Was anything implied by my colleague's comment that could be misconstrued by the applicant?  Or am I just being my usual worry-wort self?

i wouldn't worry about it. it probably gave the applicant false hope, but in most states alot more than that would be needed to form an implied contract

I wouldn't worry about this comment either. It seems pretty harmless and does not seem like a discriminatory comment to me.

The comment seems harmless and it didn't sound like a promise to me.

Seems harmless to me as well - just the manager trying to be nice most likely.

I wouldn't worry about it either.  You could have a conversation with this manager or all of your hiring managers during a meeting and go back over some common do's and don'ts for interviewing.  Use that exact comment as an example of things that we should not say to an applicant, because we don't want to give them false hope if you find a better candidate.
