Paying Drivers

Our company employs several drivers that we send to various routes to pick up oders and drop of supplies.  We currently pay them hourly and provide them with a gas card.  However, we have come to find that some drivers are milikng their hours by pulling over and taking breaks, napping on the job, visiting family, etc. all while on the clock.  We have also figured out that they are abusing the company gas card as well.  Does anyone have any ideas for a new payroll system for drivers?   Does anyone else employ drivers and have any advice?    Thanks for your help!

  • We employ drivers that we pay hourly as well.  Our drivers must complete a daily route log in addition to any other required paperwork that lists the time they arrive at work in the morning, the store or location they drive to (in our case it will be several locations in a day) and the time they get to the site, leave the site, etc.  They also must list their daily end time and lunch time as well.  This daily route log is used to compile their time cards for payroll purposes.  We also are able to look at the time they spent driving to/from a location and discuss with them if the time appears to be out of line with the "norm".

We have also begun using a device on each of our trucks that enables us to run reports on the vehicle for the day.  It will list all times the engine is turned off or the vehicle is stopped (to allow you to determine if/when breaks are taken) as well as features such as speeding, hard braking, etc.  You can go to www.fleetilla.com for more information on that product.  It is relatively inexpensive (we are a pretty small company) but the benefits are huge!
