Hiring IT: In a Galaxy Far Away . . .

Anyone willing to share some tried and true recruiting methods for qualified IT professionals? The funniest one I heard lately (and probably effective too) was to set up a booth at a Star Trek convention.  At this point, I am open to all suggstions.

It's almost graduation time, so you should have a new crop of newbie IT people to chose from.  Have you contacted local colleges and tech schools?

As for experienced people, post jobs on tech-specific or industry-specific websites, not the general ones. This has been successful for our company.

I agree with fisHRman.  Posting the job on tech-specific or industry-specific websites sounds like a good idea.  You might also post a job opening on your bulletin board.  Someone in your company may know of someone in that field that is looking for a position.

you could also use an internship program to provide a pipeline of skilled IT students.

i just read this article in the boston globe about how the city police went to great lengths to recruit more applicants and create a more diverse pool of candidates. the drive had stalled a few months ago but the new effort really paid off. maybe you an use some of those techniques for IT workers:
