Preference to local residents

I have noticed that a number of public sector employers are stating that they give preference to local residents. Any comments?

    Well, if the taxpayers are helping to pay for the salaries, I'd bet they would rather fund the pockets of someone local, with local ideas, values, etc., than an outsider. But then again, I'm from Chicago.....we have no room to talk here in the Windy City :D

    We do not have a set policy but it is a consideration. .
    *on higher level jobs we can not pay to relocate or assist with interview /travel
    * police and fire -we have found we are often a training ground for non locals who then move on to larger depts/cities.
    *we are a small OLD city and if someone is already here, I think there is more of a chance they are "here to stay"

    That having been said, they hired me from Ohio :)
