FMLA and Intermittent Leave for Care of Newborn

FMLA says that a company can decide if it wants to offer intermittent leave for the care of a newborn (or adopted) child. We have had a request for an employee to work part-time after her "disability" period is over meaning she would be gone 3-6 wks (her estimate) and then work PT hours for the next 6-9 wks. While this may work in this particular case, we don't want to set a precedent that requires we do this for everyone. Does anyone have any experience with this type of intermittent leave? Any statistics on how many companies offer this? Any assistance is appreciated.
