Catching A Few Z's

Everyone has probably heard about the air traffic controller in DC who was apparently asleep at the wheel early Wednesday morning. If you haven't, click [URL="http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/reagan-national-controller-drug-tested-and-suspended-after-falling-asleep-on-the-job/2011/03/24/ABPzu5RB_story.html?hpid=z2"]here[/URL] for a report from the Washington Post.

So far, the air traffic controller has been drug tested and suspended. How would you respond it if an employee in your organization was caught sleeping on the job? Is this issue covered in your policies?

Sometimes our eyes have a mind of their own and end up asleep. Caught many employees nodding off.

In a former life, we caught a night watchman asleep - he had brought in a small cot and set it up behind boxes so he would not be seen. We woke him and told him to pick up his bed and walk.
Also caught a teller asleep, head down on the counter at a remote drive-in facility. This had been going on for some time before we found out - she is no longer with us.

I once worked for a manufacturer that brought in raw materials in large, plastic gaylords with lids. We discovered that an employee had brought in blankets and pillows, turning one of the gaylords into a little nest for his naps. He was OUTA THERE!

I am not proud to say that I did actually sleep at not one but two of my different jobs when I was in college.

One was a night shift at a hotel from 11 pm until 7 am. I was taking a full load of daytime classes so you can see how that would happen. While I slept I dreampt the hotel burnt down and I woke up in a panic.

The other one (where I was caught) was in a high end retail department store. I caught some zzzs during a "break" in the back room. I was caught and reprimanded (but not fired).

So neither of those experiences were positive.

I worked 2-3 PT jobs at a time throughout college, so it was always a struggle to stay awake in certain classes. I fell asleep in class one time and woke to an entirely different group of people. While I slept, my class had ended and the next one came in. I must have looked hilarious snoozing away that whole time.

Frank - where did you attend college. When my wife was teaching at MU she had a student fall asleep in one her classes - near the end of class. She announced that class was over and she left the young man asleep on the desk.

The retail store I worked for was I. Magnin's in the South Coast Plaza. At the time, this was one of the ritziest malls in California. I think I only got hired because I happen to apply at the exact moment that one of their sales associates was leaving.

My shining moment was the day my manager Betsy introduced me to the corporate executives (all women) and I pointed to a nearby display and said.......
