Over 74,000 people applied for Charlie Sheen's intern position through Internships.com -- since Monday. Apparently, he's looking for someone to help leverage his social media network.



My question to everyone is: what's the largest number of applicants you've ever received for a single position and how did you handle the volume? What did you do then that you would do differently now?

Sharon, at the risk of not answering your question and taking this thread in a direction you never envisioned, I want to calm everyone's fears in HR Hero Land and announce that I -- who tweets for HRHero at http://www.twitter.com/hrhero -- have taken my name out of consideration for the Charlie Sheen internship. Whew, yes, I know it was a close call. We received 405 applicants for an Executive Assistant posting....it was a bit nuts. When we posted that position, we had just started using our current recruiting software, and we didn't yet know about the additional functionalities we had to screen people from the start. Knowing what I know now, I would have put more work in on the front end, setting up screening filters, developing online questionnaires, etc.

Wow... coffee. That would be nuts. Just trying to reply to all those people would be insane.

Perhaps for your next opening, you could consider a series of Geocaching coordinates that would lead candidates on an adventure throughout your county to various locales.

The final location would lead to a box that is buried and inside that box is an employment application printed on special light green paper.

The person who submits that application: hired.
