Transferring Knowledge

I read an article about retirement, older workers, etc. It talked about whether the standard retirement age should be pushed back a couple of years and how that could work OK for people in some professions but not in others. It also talked briefly about a company that pairs younger workers with older workers to transfer the older workers' knowledge rather than allowing the organization to just lose that knowledge.
Reading the article made me wonder how many companies have similar programs. I realize that many organizations have, or at least think about having, succession plans for key positions, but what about less visible, less mission critical, positions? How is that knowledge being transferred in most organizations?
What is happening in your company? Do you have a formal succession plan? Does it encompass more than the top level positions in your organization?
