Walmart
Paul in Cannon Beach

We have discussed Walmart on this forum before and I know some of you worked for the retail giant in past lives. I just found out yesterday that we are getting a Walmart (not in Cannon Beach).
My first reaction was "oh no!". I dont see a need for the store and my fear is it will destroy the smaller stores in our area (which has been a documented pattern). We already have a brand new HUGE Costco being built, a Fred Meyer which is a retail/grocery/department store, and a variety of smaller chains (Ross, etc).
So I am bummed.

Interestingly, when Wal Mart was building here one of the local stores actually shot itself in the foot anticipating the idea that Wal Mart would take business away from them...we were looking for a toddler bed for my grandson and we went to a local furniture store that had always carried them before. We asked why they didn't have any and if they would be getting some soon, and the salesperson said "Oh, we stopped selling them because we knew Wal Mart would carry them and they're opening up in six months anyhow." Yes, but we needed one right then, not six months from then, and we would have bought it from them had they had it! (And as it is, our Wal Mart doesn't stock toddler beds anyhow).
Walmart came to Topeka as a HyperMart about 20 years ago. We now have 3, and now many other stores have come to the area. A higher priced grocery store tried to move in, but failed due to the presence of Walmart. I call that a win for the local consumer. There are still plenty of mom and pop type stores, and I think they do better because they can specialize in one area as opposed to trying to serve everyone in the community.
I swear by all things proper and decent that if they dont keep their bathrooms clean I will picket.

One time I was with my wife in the Walmart we do frequent up in Washington. It was around Valentines day and there was a stand full of lacy red mesh women's nighties and underwear. Standing next to the undies were two men wearing camo jackets, jeans, and trucker hats. Something about the scene made me want to take a photo...
