When my daughter was younger she would tell people her daddy "made people cry" for a living.

So far this morning, I have already scored a 1 tissue conversation.

That's a bummer, Paul. I really hate those kinds of conversations. It comes with the job, I know, but that doesn't mean we have to like it.

Usually the tearful conversations I participate in are because someone else made them cry, not because I did.

I haven't really even had one of those in a while, although I came close a couple of weeks ago when somebody called me on the verge of tears but then cheered right up when I told them that they'd been misinformed about something. I like those kind of conversations a lot better.

They seem to come in waves. I can go a long time without any tearful sessions and then have two, three or more in a short time. Every good HR office is always stocked with tissues and chocolate. Good luck Paul.

My kids used to tell people that I fire employees for a living. Actually, now that they are in their 20's, they still describe what I do as firing employees. Although, they are better able to put that one task in context of everything else that HR does.

I always have a box of tissues in my desk. You never know when they will be needed.
