Mileage-What would you do?

An employee who normally works at one location was desparately needed for a day at another site 10 miles away. Employee has now requested reimbusement for mileage from home to the site and back (20 miles). If the employee had come into her regular office first and then went to the other office we would pay mileage to and from (25 miles). The question is would you pay mileage from her home to the other office and back home and if we did would we be establishing a precedent?

Our written policy is to pay the difference between the two, when the temporary assignment is a longer drive than the employee's home branch.

FYI: it's not tax deductible if it is just from her home to the worksite. Interestingly, if she comes to work first and you pay her for 25 miles, instead of 20, it will be tax deductible. You might be able to make an argument for the 20 miles if you get audited, by proving you were saving money for both you and the IRS by doing it that way, but it will have to be on appeal.

Got to love the IRS.

I agree with Frank. I'd pay the standard amount for mileage reimbursement for any miles above their normal commute to/from work. Otherwise, you may end up with other ees wanting to get paid for their drive to/from work too.

Thanks everyone, it turns out that she grossly exaggerated her actual mileage so we declined payment.
