Applicant Testing

We would like applicants to create a short power-point presentation and then present the material to the interviewees as part of the interview process. Another part of the interview would be writing a business letter that would demonstrate a high level of writing skills. If your organization does something similar, we would appreciate it if you would allow us to use your material.

  • Just curious, is creating and presenting power point presentations part of the job these candidates are applying for?

I think that as long as what you're asking the applicant to do as a test is relevant to the position he/she is applying for it is ok. For example, asking a writer to provide x number of words on the kind topic he/she would be writing about as part of the job would be acceptable. Asking an applicant for a writer position to prepare a spreadsheet showing the correlation between the number of articles written versus the number published about a specific topic during a specific timeframe for a specific publication wouldn't be acceptable.

A question. Do you provide the raw data/information to the applicant and ask him/her to create a powerpoint from that or does he/she have to research and provide the content for the presentation?
