I have one at home my mother used to make. She used "sour milk" which was vinegar and milk in the recipe. Now you could use sour cream. I will see if I can find it tonight. It is very good.
1/2 C. shortening or softened margarine or unsalted butter 1 C. sugar 2 eggs 1/2 C .buttermilk or sour milk (1/2 C milk-1 tsp vinegar- let bubble) 1 tsp. soda 2 C. flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 C. nuts 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg 2-3 bananas, mashed. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and bananas and sour or buttermilk. Add alternately with flour and spices. Mix
I have an old family oatmeal cookie recipe from the early 1900's that uses milk & vinegar combined like that, but that's the only place I'd ever heard of it until now.
This banana bread recipe does sound yummy....I'm going to have to try it soon!
I have a great poppy seed bread recipe if anyone wants it, just let me know. And, a deep dish brownie recipe that makes the best brownies I've ever had.
Sharon, my banana bread recipe itself is relatively simple, as the secret is just in the method rather than the ingredients. This tip, which is great for any type of quick bread, muffin, etc., comes partly from Alton Brown's "muffin method" and partly from Baking Illustrated.
The recipe I use combines all of the dry ingredients in one bowl and all of the wet ingredients in the other bowl (no creaming of butter and sugar for this one). You then mix the wet and dry ingredients and -- here's the important part -- don't overmix. Mix the wet and dry *just* until they're combined and then stop. Don't mix until smooth. It's even okay to have a few little streaks of flour left that aren't entirely incorporated.
Doing this results in a very light, moist, tender texture.
Recipe:
2 cups plain flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup sugar 3 bananas, mashed 1/4 cup plain yogurt 2 large eggs, beaten lightly 3/4 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: Walnuts, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, etc.
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a standard loaf pan. 2. Sift the flour, soda, and salt together in a bowl, then add the sugar. If you're using add-ins like dried cranberries, walnuts, etc., toss these with 1/4 cup of the dry mix. Doing this will keep your add-ins from sinking to the bottom of the loaf of bread. 3. In a separate bowl, mix the bananas, yogurt, eggs, butter, and vanilla. 4. With a rubber spatula, gently fold the wet mixture and your add-ins into the dry mixture until just combined. The batter should still be chunky and may still have a few streaks of flour in it. 5. Let the batter rest for about 5 minutes to allow the flour to hydrate, then pour into your prepared loaf pan. 6. Bake until golden brown and done in the center -- about one hour.
3 Cups Self-rising Flour 2 Cups Sugar 1.5 Cups Milk 1.5 Cups Oil (Canola oil works nicely, but any vegetable oil will do.) 2 Tablespoons Poppy Seed 2 Teaspoons Vanilla 2 Teaspoons Melted Butter 3 Eggs
Mix all ingredients. Beat 2 minutes. (I use a wire wisk.) Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Use 2 large loaf pans, lightly oiled and floured. Can also use 4 small pans. Adjust cooking time accordingly. If using muffin pans, bake for 15-20 minutes.
Glaze:
.75 Cup Sugar .25 Cup Orange Juice .50 Teaspoon Vanilla .50 Teaspoon Melted Butter
Do not heat to melt sugar. Mix together and pour over hot bread. Let sit 30 minutes then remove from pans.

I'm curious. Do y'all keep your recipes at work? Do you work at home? Or, did this recipe come from "Martha's" website?
Fess up.
