Ok, I'm going to admit that I am technology challenged but, on Paul from Cannon Beach's posts there is an additional Icon (generic looking) that says something like "Send an message via ICQ." What is that????????????
Thats odd. I don't even have ICQ although I know what it is. ICQ is an instant messenger application. Get it? I seek you = ICQ. Those tech people are a barrel of laughs.
Anyways, I dont have it but apparently if you do you can Instant Message someone from the forum.
Yeah, apparently on my profile I had put "you can contact me through msn messenger" so that must have triggered the ICQ icon.
I don't use instant messenger anymore (too distracting) so I modified my profile. That must have removed the icon.
ICQ is a great tool for anyone who does alot of instant messaging. On the other hand, instant messaging is a great tool for anyone who wants to decrease their productivity.
I use MSN instant messaging daily. There are several of us in one office, some of whom should not be privy to confidential matters, and we can't always just get up and walk away to discuss confidential stuff.
Using IM helps us discuss confidential matters not requiring lengthy discussion without having to leave our desks to get some privacy.
And, yes, we sometimes end up chatting about totally non-job-related topics. I bought a coworker a five-minute hourglass for this type of situation. Five minutes are up - go back to work!
Let's see-- 5 minutes a day X 5 days = 25 minutes a week X 50 weeks (allowing for vacation) = 1250 minutes a year / 60 minutes per hr. = 20.8333333 hrs. X 12.00 per hr. = 249.9999999 dollars wasted.
Sorry I didn't put a "disclaimer" that I was only funnin. I too multi-task while I post on the forum, listen to my CD, watch TV, eat my lunch and complete my 2003 turnover reports.
I'm just sorry that I don't have that ICQ because it would sure save me a lot of walking and talking!!!
One advantage of ICQ or other instant messaging is that it isn't archived, which means you can discuss confidential stuff without finding two years later that an enterprising trial lawyer has obtained your discussions with a discovery motion.
On the other hand, some categories of companies are forbidden to use it for this very reason -- stock brokerages, for instance, for whom the SEC wants to be able to find out what time it was when you talked to Martha Stewart....
The reason it's on our profiles page is because it came by default with our software. We don't use ICQ or the other IM programs.

I bet I need to revise my profile.
It is on your the masthead of your postings right between the 'view use profile' icon and the 'check user IP address' icon.
At least it was when I posted this, now that I look back, it is gone.

And I spend a hell of a lot more than five minutes a day chatting about non job-related stuff. I rationalize it as bonding with my coworkers.
And I only make minimum wage, so I'm not really wasting that much. x:D
