These were on msn this am. . .supposedly actual reasons people have called in to work. .


1.While rowing across the river to work, I got lost in the fog.
2. Someone stole all my daffodils.
3. I had to go audition for American Idol.
4. My ex-husband stole my car so I couldn't drive to work.
5. My route to work was shut down by a presidential motorcade.
6. I have transient amnesia and couldn't remember my job.
7. I was indicted for securities fraud this morning.
8. The line was too long at Starbucks.
9. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.
10. I didn't have money for gas because all of the pawnshops were closed.

Actually, as odd as it seems, I've been delayed by presidential motorcades on multiple occasions! Even worse was the time I wasn't allowed to leave the building I was working in because they had not yet established a "security perimeter" for Reagan. Hey, people! I'm on lunch! Let me out!

Even worse... he wasn't even president anymore.

I did think that was the most believable. . well except for the last one which could well be a reality soon.

A few years ago, if I remember correctly, someone here had an employee tell them they missed work because they dreamed they had called in, and when they actually woke up, they thought the dream was real.

I've had people call in with hair emergencies (hair turned out green when they colored it so they had to wait until the salon was open to go have it corrected) and tanning booth accidents (fell asleep and attendant forgot they were in there and they ended up with a bad sunburn all over their body and couldn't even sit down comfortably) but I don't ever recall one as creative as the dream excuse!

How about, I 'm late because I forgot to put my shoes on. I was almost at work when I looked down and saw that I was barefoot. Had to go home and get my shoes.

Another true story, I cannot come to work because there is a rattlesnake in my drive way. It is sunning itself right by the driver's side door.

Dear Employee, put on your danged shoes, and get in on the PASSENGER side of your vehicle. Sheesh!

Wait, maybe I will use the rattlesnake excuse tomorrow. Could use a break.

Hey Frank, the employee who "dreamed he was already at work" was mine. I won an HR HERO t shirt with that excuse. I think I still have the write up somewhere. Classic.

I dream about work all the time. Wonder if I could tell my boss that I've already put in a full day's work in my sleep, therefore am not coming in to the office.

Q, although it makes perfect sense to us, I would not attempt to sell that one to the boss. Besides, if you did dream about work, it was a nightmare not a dream.

At the office you are working in the Inner Sanctum. That's like an asylum with no locks on the doors to keep the inmates caged. They just roam the grounds looking for helpless victims. Once you are spotted, the BMW's start.

That happens to others too? And I thought I was so alone in my paranoia... Except here it's not BMW's. We don't pay quite that much.

BMW's is not for the car. It is for Bitchin, Whining and Moaning. It is a more genteel way for HR people to complain and still not piss any one off.
