Mardi Gras

Well, it's over for this year. Watching the news the past couple of days has been pretty interesting. I saw one report (Lehrer News Hour - PBS) in which a reporter spoke to some New Orleans natives watching floats go happy with the decision to go forward with the celebration & then the same reporter later speaking with three women (still homeless from Katrina) that had only been recently rescued from living under an overpass. So the question is: Was it a good idea to have Mardi Gras or a bad one?

How many homeless people were there before Katrina? Go ahead and have some fun, there will always be the homeless.

Ultimately its probably a good thing as it has kept New Orleans and the massive job of rebuilding in the national spotlight for a little longer. Hopefully, that has helped to continue raising the support they will need for the months to come.

Near the school where we are serving there are two large parking lots covered with white single-wide trailers and some campers. There is a sign out front that says FEMA. I'm told by someone who lives here that they've been here for months. He said that the trailers won't do folks any good if there aren't utilities in the communities. They send out about 6 trailers per month.

I guess I was torn before Mardi Gras, but now I think they did a good job. I love New Orleans and I think they have a lot of work to do & I'm a bit frustrated with how long it's taking. I was orginally worried that the coverage would only include people partying & would gloss over how many people are still in dire need of help and assistance. I have to say that I thought the media did a good job covering this one. Wow, I don't say that too often... x:D
