A brain exercise for your weekend. This was my daughter's homework.
Use the following statements to determine the names of the men playing each position on this baseball team.
1. Andy dislikes the catcher.
2. Ed's sister is engaged to the second baseman.
3. The center fielder is taller than the right fielder.
4. Harry and the third baseman live in the same building.
5. Paul and Allen each won $20.00 from the pitcher at pinochle.
6. Ed and the outfielders play poker during their free time.
7. The pitcher's wife is the third baseman's sister.
8. All the battery and infield, except Allen, Harry and Andy, are shorter than Sam. (battery = catcher and pitcher)
9. Paul, Andy, and the shortstop lost $150.00 each at the racetrack.
10. Paul, Harry, Bill, and the catcher took a trouncing from the second baseman at the pool.
11. Sam is undergoing divorce proceedings.
12. The catcher and the third baseman each have two children.
13. Ed, Paul, Jerry, the right fielder, and the center fielder are bachelors. The others are married.
14. The shortstop, the third baseman and Bill each cleaned up betting on the fight.
15. One of the outfielders is either Mike or Andy.
16. Jerry is taller that Bill. Mike is shorter than Bill. Each of them is heaveier than the third baseman.

My daughter asked me to help her. I tried. I guess I am not a logical person. Couldn't figure it out. So, which of you forumites are logical?

(edit) Oh, sorry. I looked it up. I guess it is. I've played baseball all my life and never heard it used.
P Bob
SS Dennis
1st Scott
2nd John
3rd Greg
LF Dick
CF Dave
RF Rick
That's my ball team and I'm sticking to it!
Jerry = LF
Bill = CF
Mike = RF
Andy = 3rd
Harry = SS
Allen = 2nd
Paul = 1st
Ed = P
Sam = C
My head hurts. I'm going home!
Ed = Pitcher
Harry = Shortstop
Paul = Center Field
Allen = Catcher
Sam = Left Field
Bill = First Base
Jerry = Second Base
Mike = Right Field
Is this even close?
C = Allen
P = Harry
SS = Ed
1st = Paul
2nd = Jerry
3rd = Andy
LF = Sam
CF = Bill
RF = Mike
(Of course I had to assume those with children were married. I'm not sure that's a logical conclusion to make.)
Catcher - Allen
Pitcher - Harry
Shortstop - Ed
1st - Paul
2nd - Jerry
3rd - Andy
LF - Sam
CF - Bill
RF - Mike
I think the first one I knew was the left fielder was Sam. Then I just worked back through the clues again to see if I could narrow down the other positions/names.
This one was tricky too because it gave quite a bit of extra information (you don't really care that some were playing cards, at the racetrack, etc.) Those clues just helped to know things like #5 = The pitcher is not Paul nor Allen.
And I think you are right about Sam being the left fielder. I knew that right away since Sam on the Forum is ALWAYS COMING OUT OF LEFT FIELD!
The pitcher, however, is Beagle since we all know he is always throwing spitballs.
the baserunner is Ray since he is always sliding back and forth.
The person who strikes out every time she's at bat is HRinNH since 'you can't get to first base with her'.
The guy who is constantly flying out is Gillian3 since he is known to 'pop up' on the Forum every now and then.
And the old rube in the left field stands is Shadowfax since he's so good with a Bronx Cheer!
See, this thing has multiple possibilities.
Harry = Catcher
Paul = Left Field
Jerry = 2nd
Mike = Right Field
Ed = Shortshop
Allen = 1st
Bill = Center Field
Sam = Pitcher
Andy = 3rd
Have a great Valentine's Day!!
