Scottsdale

Going to Scottsdale this weekend for our daughter's wedding. Any suggestions for things to do where it won't be 100 degrees? Laying by the pool is out of the question. I haven't owned a swim suit in over 30 years.

  • Gee, you are not making it easy. There are lots of hotels , all with pools and spas. How about a trip to Sedona, with the gorgeous red mountains? Grand Canyon, that big hole in the ground? There are always the casinos.

Scottsdale has plenty of good restaurants and (ahem) expensive stores. Window shopping is always a blast there.
  • I'll second Sedona! It's beautiful. If you don't mind shelling out some bucks - the Red Rock Jeep tours are phenomenal & well worth the money.
  • There must be some place in Scottsdale where you can sun yourself by the pool au naturel. If not, they still sell swimsuits you know!
  • Snottsdale? Oops, prejudice showing.

If you don't have time for the trip to Sedona or the Canyon, just head a little north to the Carefree area. A LITTLE cooler, and some pretty stuff.

  • I enjoyed both the Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum on a recent trip. And Scottsdale has some fun restaurants and music clubs (okay, honkytonks) if you've got time post-sundown.

  • Brad, of course! How could I have forgotten the Heard. Very interesting. Really gives you the flavor of Arizona.

  • Kartchner Caverns offers really cool walking tours. Just be prepared to sweat. It may be underground but is hot and sticky. x:)

Ooh - try Rawhide in north Scottsdale. Wild West kind of atmosphere, great food if you aren't on a diet.

Old Scottsdale has tons of boutiques that are fun and kind of touristy without being TOO touristy.

Horseback riding at South Mountain. OK, it'll be hot as heck but really amazing scenery.

Tempe Towne Lake. No swimming allowed, so don't worry about that swimsuit. They have boat tours. It's right next to ASU so there are tons of restaurants around. And the school year is starting so the area is pretty active. There are usually events on the weekends.

Phoenix Art Museum. AZ Science Center.

(Can you tell I used to work at a hotel and had to give guests ideas of stuff to do?) x:D

We are conducting company wide teacher training on Saturday. You can hang out with me and 200 teachers if you want. We have lots of toys. x;-)

I'm sure there's lots more to do. I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.

  • This is a hoot! What on earth makes you think you'll have a dime left after you fork over everything in your wallet to your son-in-law just before they drive away? I recommend you prepay your hotel bill and pack sandwiches in a cooler for the trip home.
  • Well, thanks, again for the suggestions. Of course we didn't have too much time to do things, only being there for Fri. thru Sun. We did get up to Sedona. My wife is just in love with the Southwest, having lived in Albuquerque for a couple of years, and she enjoyed the mountains. My son got to go to Taliesen West. He's a great fan of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Apparently there are a LOT of people in the world who don't mind 100 degrees by the size of the metro Phoenix area. I'm not one of them!

This was our daughter's second wedding, she's a PA and he's an MD, so our contribution to the wedding was to get ourselves to the site, plus a wedding gift. On a public sector HR salary, we couldn't have paid for our own meals, much less the other guests. It was a very nice wedding, outdoors, overlooking the golf course, superb food, etc.

Don - We paid for three weddings in about a year and a half a number of years ago, and, in addition, my son from my first marriage got married the same day as one of our daughters (planned with no knowledge of the other date), so I can appreciate your comment about the sandwiches and cooler!
