Vacation in Charlotte

I would like some ideas. My family is going on vacation to Charlotte, NC next week. I've been there many times, My mom and sisters live there, but It has been a while since my last visit and I want some ideas on what to see there. We plan on Carrowinds and The Motor Speedway (I guess it Nextel Motor Speedway now) but I want some additional ideas. My kids are ages 8 to 16.

Yes. x:D Call Greyhound, get prices, send the kids to your moms for the week, stay in MD, and do the stuff you've been wanting to do FOR YOU for the past three years! The kids will love you for it, your mom will enjoy the kids and you'll have a much better time yourself, everyone will come away happy and no one will be hurt by it. Win Win Win.

Been there, done that. My daughter flew down there when she was 7! Besides, I still enjoy both of my sisters' company.

On a less lighthearted note, I don't think my mom is going to be around too much longer-which is one of the reasons we are doing vacation down there this year.

Head to the mountains, NG! You'll be close to spectacular hiking, whitewater rafting, the Cherokee reservation, Sliding Rock, and my favorite creek to ride in an inner tube:

Thanks, good ideas. I do remember inner tubing down the Green River? many many years ago. I don't remember where that is in relation to NC, Charlotte and the mountains.

This is not to the Green River, but to Pisgah National Forest. This has sliding rock, looking Glass Falls, etc. Take 85S to 74E to 26W. From 26 take the Asheville Airport exit (they just renumbered them, so I don't remember the new number) Take a left and you will be on HWY 280. Follow that road to Brevard. Enjoy the mountaine views. Before you get to Brevard you will come to a large intersection and you will see Pisgah National forest sign that tells you to turn right. There is also a trout hatchery at the bottom. Your kids will love sliding rock. Beware though the water is FREEZING!!!!!!!!!! It will take about 2 hrs to get to the intersection to turn into Pisgah Forest.

That's a great idea, especially since she is 100% Hungarian. I have allways wanted to learn how to cook a few hungarian meals myself.

Have you ever tried the hungarian breakfast pancake? It's call (SP?) pollachinta. That is one of the things I know how to make. My kids think it's a treat when I make it for them. Every year at Christmas time while I was growing up, my mom would make this hungarian sweet bread. It was dellicious. Maybe this time I can get the recipe.

I've had Portugese sweet bread...are they anything like that?

The Venezuelans have a special Christmas dish called Hallacas. Lots of work but it can involve the whole family so it's a fun bonding event that ends in a satisfying meal.
